Cochrane CollaborationThis international organization supports informed health care decision-making by preparing, updating, and making available systematic reviews of effects of health practices. There is broad consensus about the high overall quality of Cochrane systematic reviews, which are prepared and updated by over 50 groups focusing on different topical areas. The Pregnancy and Childbirth and the Neonatal review groups are of special interest to maternal and newborn care. Some reviews from other review groups include relevant content. The Cochrane Library (updated monthly) is the main product of the Cochrane Collaboration. This exceptional resource of "independent high-quality evidence for health care decision making" includes a series of databases. In addition to The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (with over 4,000 systematic reviews or protocols that are being used to develop systematic reviews), this publication includes a register of controlled trials (CENTRAL, with about 500,000 records), a methodology bibliography (with over 7,500 records), the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), Health Technology Assessment Database (HTA), NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED), and more. Work to systematically identify, summarize, and present the best available evidence about effects of maternity practices began in the 1970s, led to the establishment of the Cochrane Collaboration in 1993, and continues through its Pregnancy and Childbirth and Neonatal Groups. This clinical area ushered in the era of evidence-based practice and as a result has a relatively rich body of systematic reviews from the Cochrane Collaboration and others. Below are selected resources for learning more and gaining access to the reviews. "Online source" indicates that the resource is available online without charge. Cost-free registration may be required for access to some items with this designation. Listening to MothersSM III is the third national
survey exploring women’s experiences in pregnancy and childbirth.
Commissioned by Childbirth Connection, conducted by Harris Interactive, and
funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the survey polled 2,400 women who gave
birth in U.S. hospitals from 2011 to 2012. Results show that medically
intensive experiences are typical, and evidence-based practices are
underutilized. Childbearing women need better support and knowledge to
navigate their maternity care.
