mother getting pregnancy checkup with doctorIt's a challenging time to be a health professional, and especially one with responsibility for pregnant women, new mothers and babies. Health professional practice in the 21st century requires the capacity to understand, provide and foster care that is consistent with results of the best available research -- whether providing direct services, setting policy, conducting research, or educating professionals and childbearing women themselves.  A vast continually evolving literature of uneven quality poses major challenges for busy professionals.

Childbirth Connection and this website are ready to lend a hand.  Resources here can help maternity professionals:

  • stay abreast of the evolving literative and in touch with more definitive resources for guiding practice
  • develop skills for locating and critically appraising systematic reviews, better studies, guidelines and other resources
  • apply the best knowledge about making change and improving practice
  • better understand perspectives of mothers themselves
  • provide childbearing women with trustworthy woman-friendly resources for taking responsibility and making informed decisions.

A High-Quality, High-Value Maternity Care System Is Within Reach

Childbirth Connection brought together more than 100 health care leaders - from delivery systems, providers, and consumers to health plans and purchasers, liability insurers and quality experts - to develop two direction-setting reports, "2020 Vision" and "Blueprint for Action." These reports were the culmination of over two years' collaborative multi-stakeholder work aimed at reversing troubling maternity care trends. Transforming Maternity Care offers full access to these reports and tracks and coordinates efforts to implement recommendations.

The site also offers many opportunities for health professionals to be involved in the transformation. Learn how to take action as a health professional, or access a variety of improvement tools, from lists of quality collaboratives and toolkits, to a data center. Also, be sure to read the Transforming Maternity Care Blog, which highlights innovative quality improvement efforts, analyzes health care trends, and shares opportunities and resources.

Listening to MothersSM III is the third national survey exploring women’s experiences in pregnancy and childbirth. Commissioned by Childbirth Connection, conducted by Harris Interactive, and funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the survey polled 2,400 women who gave birth in U.S. hospitals from 2011 to 2012. Results show that medically intensive experiences are typical, and evidence-based practices are underutilized. Childbearing women need better support and knowledge to navigate their maternity care.
