Dear Friend,
We've been working hard to make transforming maternity care easier. We need every stakeholder engaged at every level of the system to deliver high-quality, high-value maternity care. To accelerate, coordinate, and inspire these efforts, we've created a new resource and we're happy to announce it's launch today.
One Stop Shopping for Maternity Care Quality Information and Resources
For the first time, those involved in maternity care system improvement have a single resource to find information, resources, data, and inspiration. Childbirth Connection is thrilled to announce the launch of transform.childbirthconnection.org.

The brand new site offers:
-
Full access to the Transforming Maternity Care 2020 Vision and Blueprint for Action
-
An Action Center, with ideas and resources for consumer advocates, health care providers, hospital and health system leaders, purchasers, and quality experts
-
A database of quality improvement projects - browse for projects by Blueprint area or by quality improvement strategy or see what Childbirth Connection is doing to implement priority Blueprint recommendations
-
A Data Center where users can find statistical reports, interactive maps, and raw data files to help understand and improve maternity care quality
-
Many more resources, including a list of quality improvement toolkits, links to obstetric and perinatal safety courses, a directory of quality collaboratives, and a robust bibliography of the quality improvement literature.
Share, Connect, and Learn to Improve Maternity Care Quality
Are you involved in a quality improvement project? Tell us about your work so others who are engaged in quality improvement efforts can know about your project, collaborate with you, or gain inspiration to try something similar in their own community. Complete a 5-minute survey about your project and we will add it to our database. We may even feature it in a future eNews!
Galvanizing State and Regional Efforts with Better Access to Data
As Childbirth Connection works toward development, testing, and adoption of more maternity care quality measures to track system performance, we recognize that many state and regional data are already available but underutilized. In partnership with Health 2.0, Childbirth Connection issued a challenge to developers to help us visualize geographic variations in maternity care access, procedure use, outcomes, and costs. We were excited to unveil the winning visualization at the Health 2.0 Spring Fling in San Diego, where health system leaders and innovators gathered to discuss the future of health. The engaging, interactive tool designed by Damien Leri and Ian Bennett, MD, PhD, from the University of Pennsylvania, shows how maternity quality indicators vary across states and reveals trends over time. Please help us spread the word about this important tool for advocates and policy makers working to improve maternity care. You can launch the map by clicking below, or check out a video demonstration to see how it works.

New at ChildbirthConnection.org
As the Transforming Maternity Care project moves forward, ChildbirthConnection.org continues to be the web's best source of evidence-based information on labor and birth for women. New resources on the award-winning site cover material on key elements of the maternity care experience, from underlying components to in-depth pregnancy topics. The most recent additions include:
-
A brand new section called Understanding & Navigating the Maternity Care System that helps women to understand the fundamental aspects of the maternity care system and offers them guidance on informed decision making
-
Induction of Labor - launched in January, this section discusses the benefits, risks, and appropriate uses of labor induction, while offering women meaningful suggestions on how to apply this information to their birth choices
-
Updated information on Labor Support from the latest Cochrane Systematic Review findings.
We Want Your Feedback
We hope these resources help and inspire you to make change. If there is a quality improvement toolkit or resource that you think should be listed on the site, please let us know. If you have any other feedback about the new site, contact TMC Project Director, Amy Romano, at romano@childbirthconnection.org. And don't forget, if you are involved with a quality improvement project and would like to share your story to inspire and assist others, please fill out our project submission form.
A high-quality, high-value maternity care system is within reach, but none of us can do it alone. Please be part of the transformation.
Sincerely,

Maureen Corry

News and Features

Listening to MothersSM III is the third national
survey exploring women’s experiences in pregnancy and childbirth.
Commissioned by Childbirth Connection, conducted by Harris Interactive, and
funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the survey polled 2,400 women who gave
birth in U.S. hospitals from 2011 to 2012. Results show that medically
intensive experiences are typical, and evidence-based practices are
underutilized. Childbearing women need better support and knowledge to
navigate their maternity care.
