The Business of Being Born
Compelled to explore the subject after the delivery of her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to question the way American women have babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and disturbing statistics about the U.S. maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal. The filmmakers ask: Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?

Prevent Cesarean Surgery
Cesarean rates in the United States are at a record high for both new and experienced mothers. Despite vast amounts of research regarding the increased risks for both mothers and babies who experience cesareans compared to vaginal birth, there is a growing acceptance of this surgery in our culture. This movie addresses the question "Why should we try to avoid unnecessary cesareans?" It also presents advice for how to increase the chance of having a normal safe vaginal birth based on recommendations from organizations such as the World Health Organization, Lamaze International, and Childbirth Connection.

Breast is Best
In response to a decline in the number of women who breastfed their babies, the Norwegian government promoted this inspiring, informational video. The video opens with an example of skin-to-skin contact immediately after a cesarean section, demonstrates successful latching, and explains how skin-to-skin contact stimulates physiologic processes that benefit both mother and baby. Other topics covered include the benefits of nighttime feeding and co-sleeping, and the issue of tongue tie. The site also details barriers to making skin-to-skin contact a standard practice in maternity care, and offers opportunities for advocacy.
